Have You Explored NordVPN’s Threat Protection Feature Yet?

NordVPN is a well-known VPN service provider that frequently introduces new features for its clients. One of its recent additions is Threat Protection.

Threat Protection is currently in beta. While the feature is available to customers, it is disabled by default. Users can access the feature by clicking on the Shield icon in the NordVPN client to see the available options.

According to NordVPN, Threat Protection goes a step further compared to the previously offered CyberSec feature. While CyberSec focused on blocking ads and malicious websites through DNS filtering, Threat Protection blocks ads, trackers, malicious websites, and files.

The CyberSec option is no longer found under General Settings; instead, it has been integrated into the Threat Protection preferences page. Users can choose between the full Threat Protection feature or a Lite version that resembles the functionality of CyberSec.

The full Threat Protection feature not only blocks resources at the DNS level but also provides protection against ads, tracking on the web, malicious websites, and files:

Block malware-infected websites to browse safely.
Avoid malicious ads for a cleaner browsing experience.
Stop web tracking to enhance privacy.
Protect devices from infected files to prevent damage.

NordVPN states that Threat Protection safeguards browsers even when the VPN connection is inactive by installing certificates in supported browsers like Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox. Firefox users need to restart the browser after installing the certificate for it to take effect.

By installing certificates, NordVPN gains significant control over the supported browsers and their activities.

Threat Protection can scan automatically downloaded executable files and may upload them to the cloud for scanning, but only if they are 20 Megabytes or smaller in size.

Final Remarks

As of now, Threat Protection is a beta feature. NordVPN would benefit from providing more information on how the feature operates, considering the current lack of detailed explanations on both the client’s setup pages and the NordVPN website. It remains unclear whether NordVPN uses its scanning capabilities for uploaded files or relies on third-party services.

The installation process of Threat Protection and the implications of installing certificates in browsers are not clearly explained to users. It’s crucial for users to understand the level of control NordVPN has over browser data before activating the feature.

Most NordVPN users may find the Lite mode feature preferable or opt to disable all features in the client and rely on alternative solutions such as uBlock Origin and antivirus programs for securing their devices.
