Microsoft has recognized an issue with the latest Windows Update affecting users of Windows 11. Some users may encounter difficulties while trying to install the newest security update for their operating system.

The security update KB5034765 was rolled out on February 13, 2024, as part of the February 2024 Patch Day. This update is the most recent cumulative update available for Windows 11 devices running versions 22H2 and 23H2.

In this update, 41 security vulnerabilities were addressed across these operating system versions, with two of them considered critical. Additionally, a notable change included relocating the Copilot for Windows icon to the right side of the taskbar, a feature gradually being rolled out to devices with the update installed.

Although Microsoft did not report any known issues at the release time, users have reported installation failures whether the update is downloaded through Windows Update or manually. Even removing the downloaded Windows Update files does not solve this issue.

Issue Encountered – KB5034765:

Some Windows 11 users may experience installation failures with this update. Users might notice the failure happening at 96% completion, accompanied by an error message “Something didn’t go as planned. No need to worry – undoing changes. Please keep your computer on” displayed on the screen.

Windows administrators inspecting the Event Log may encounter error code 0x800F0922, confirming the problem.

Microsoft suggests deleting the hidden folder C:$WinREAgent on the affected Windows device to resolve this issue. Following this deletion, a system restart may be necessary to complete the removal process of the folder.

Afterward, the security update should install without any further issues. Administrators may have to go to Settings > Windows Update to reinstall the update. Clicking on the “check for updates” button may be required to trigger the appearance of the update.

Despite the involvement of the C:$WinREAgent folder in this issue, there is no detailed explanation provided on the Windows Release Health website regarding its specific role.

Removing the $WinREAgent folder is a known solution for update-related issues on Windows devices. This temporary action clears temporary files created during update processes, with the folder regenerating upon the next update installation.
