Why Google Glass Did Not Work Out

Google_Glass_with_frame.jpg

When Google Glass was unveiled to the public, the tech industry went bananas: especially over the teaser video Google released of the functionality Google Glass had to offer and what it would look like to wear such a tech gadget. Everything was seemingly going great for Google’s project. However, times change and eventually the Google Glass project was stopped.  It was clear there were areas of improvements with Google Glass which was mostly likely the underlying reasons why is was stopped. Here are some of the main reasons why Google Glass did not work out.

#1 Looks

Let’s be honest. If everyone in the world was as into technology as the geekiest tech followers were, Google Glass would be cool. However, at the end of the day, it is simply something that a lot of people would not feel comfortable wearing around in public.

This is why Google Glass did not work and Android Wear has. Android Wear has the same functionality as Google Glass but has it strapped to your wrist in the form of a watch. Since watches are something that people wear etc. it seemed normal to strap such a technology to your wrist. In terms of wearing it on your head, well, we may be a few years away from that still…

#2 Price

Although Google Glass had not been officially released on sale to the public, a select few were able to purchase it as part of the ‘Explorer Edition’ – the starting price being a whooping $1500. For the tech geeks out there, they paid out to get such a cool and up-to-date technology. But, how many others would honestly pay over $750 for Google Glass let alone $1500 especially when there are some very good Android Wear watches for under $200?

#3 Android Wear is the Predecessor to Google Glass

As I have already mentioned through this article, there are a lot of similarities to the functionality of Google Glass and Android Wear watches. In fact, it can be seen that Android Wear is what is left of Google Glass. At its most basic, everything Google Glass could do (except recording video and taking pictures) can be done with an Android Wear watch. The fact that Android Wear has gone mainstream seemingly suggests that people are very happy wearing technology on their wrist (just like they are with fitness trackers). When it comes to head wear, well, unless it offers virtual reality, people are not yet interested.

Ultimately, I think Google Glass is ten years away from us as of now (2015). Google are constantly finding ways yo make us more connected with technology. The main problem is that Google Glass bridged the gap of this too quickly from smartphone to head wearables. Therefore, taking a step back was the best thing for Google to do with the introduction of Android Wear. So, yes, Google Glass failed. Saying this, as Android Wear picks up momentum, we may see Google Glass emerge from Google again into the far future…
