What Games will be Best on Virtual Reality Headsets?

Virtual Reality is going to hit the world by storm this year with many of the largest OEMs funding their own headsets to sell to the public in 2016. Of course, with VR headsets, there is going to be a lot of hype behind them since they make the user feel much closer to the action and drama of a game: to the point that they almost feel like they are there in the game, as it is happening. However, what games are going to be best on VR? Some will encounter inherit problems while others may make the whole experience as close as it gets to doing it in real life. Here is a list of the top three game genres that will be best to play on VR.

#1 Driving Games

By far the best game to play on virtual reality will be the driving games such as Forza Motorsport, Gran Turismo and more. This is because, in terms of the experience, the web user does not have to move. They can simply sit in a chair (possibly with vibration feedback), connect their games console to a steering wheel and pedals and the whole experience will be there. Driving inside a Bugatti Veyron from the comfort your own living room.

For this reason, the most anticipated genre for VR has got to be the driving games.

#2 First Person Shooters

It is the games where we play in first person that will benefit from VR the most, hence why the driver perspective of driving games will work great with VR. The same can be applied to first person shooters, where the web user will feel as if they are in the action of a gun battle etc.

However, there are two inherent problems with this genre:

  1. The gamer will not move in their living room – to make the experience better, the gamer should move as if they are on the game. However, this cannot happen so a controller will have to do…for now.
  2. Gamers won’t physically turn around to see what is behind them. It is far quicker and less effort to turn your perspective around in first person using the controller than to physically turn your head around. Therefore, I get the feeling that first person shooters may experience some tunnel vision: unless the games do not allow the controllers to turn their heads for them (so the player is forced to physically turn his/her head where he/she wants to look).

#3 Horror

It seems that virtual reality will really up the game for the horror and shock genre. You only have to type ‘Pewdiepie VR horror’ into YouTube to understand how scary it can be to play a horror game with an Oculus Rift. The great thing about this genre is that it relies on jump scares – with this in mind, the graphics do not have to be the best and the gamer can use a controller. Since there is no cushion to hide behind, you will experience the jump scare – there is no escaping! For this reason, you can expect there to be many horror games that will take advantage of VR to it’s fullest.
