How to Uninstall Windows Media Player

Even if you were to uninstall iWindows Media Player all the way, you’d likely not be happy with the way the system ran after that, because many things would no longer function properly.

If you have installed Windows Media Player 10, you can roll back to the version of the Player that was on your computer before installing Windows Media Player 10.

To roll back from Windows Media Player 10 to a previous version, do the following:

  • In Control Panel (Category View), click Add or Remove Programs.
  • Click Remove a program, and then do one of the following:

If you are running Windows XP Service Pack 2, select the Show updates check box (at the top of the list), click Windows Media Player 10 (in the Windows Updates section), and then click Change/Remove.

If you are running Windows XP Service Pack 1 or earlier, click Windows Media Player 10, and then click Change/Remove.

How to Uninstall Windows Media Player 9 – Windows ME, XP

Use System Restore in Windows. Windows Media Player 9 Series will be removed and the previous version will be restored.

Windows 98, 2000

In Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs, and then click Windows Media Player. Windows Media Player 9 Series will be removed.

Can I completely remove Windows Media Player?

Short answer – not really. Windows Media Player is an integral part of Windows itself. It’s used in Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer, and with pretty much every other part of Windows that uses media. Even if you were to uninstall iWindows Media Player all the way, you’d likely not be happy with the way the system ran after that, because many things would no longer function properly.
