Pros and Cons To Curved Screens

Every year, there seems to be new technological innovations that make people go, ‘it is cool so I want it’. However, with many of these innovations, they simply look cool, have limited features and, in the end, are not the best innovation to buy. An example of this could potentially be 3D which took the TV world by storm. However, until most TV channels become 3D (which I am sure is not going to happen any time soon whatsoever), the functionality is limited magnificently. In this article, I am going to look into some of the pros and cons to curved screens to find out whether they are a gimmick or not and if you should invest in one or not.

Pros

  • Improved user experience – the main benefit of having  a curved screen is that if you sit in the middle in front of the screen, the curve of the screen means the distance of the screen to you is always the same (unlike with flat screens). Therefore, the whole experience is a lot more immersive.
  • Looks 3D – One of the added bonuses of curved screens is that they make some video look 3D. This is because by having a curve, the middle of screen, depending where you are seating, feels further away from you than the sides giving a sense of 3D. Therefore, a curved screen with the capability of 3D is an amazing experience.
  • Look cool – At the end of the day, whoever you invite over to watch the football on your screen will mention how cool it looks and they are not wrong. Curved screens are as much a piece of art for the home as they are technology.

Cons

  • Limited viewing angles – Curved screens, as mentioned above, work best in the sweet spot in the middle – if you are not in this sweet spot, you should not be surprised to know that the above benefits do not really occur as much.
  • Reflections – Since the screen is curved, there is more areas of the screen that could be prone to reflections than with a flat screen. Therefore, you will be limited by where you can put your curved screen depending on the reflections it will produce.
  • More expensive – Just like with any new technology, curved screens are expensive. For this reason, many consumers tend to go for high spec flat screens rather than lower spec curved screens.

Ultimately, should you get one? If only you are going to use the screen to play, let’s say, video games, then the experience would be worth the money. But, as a family TV, then maybe flat screens are still the way to go…
