No Power In Computer After Storm

Name: stephanie

We had a storm last night, and the circuit blew where the computer is at, and now it won’t turn on. Everything else that is plugged into that outlet works except the computer. If the power is damaged in the computer, is that at all repairable, thank you.

Man, there’s a rash of this going around lately. Sounds like the electrical storm nailed your power supply. That’s the first thing that I would check out, as it’s the most likely to be dead. Depending on the strength of the power surge, it may have fried the motherboard, but more than likely it only killed the P/S.

You’ll need to get another power supply to test with, or if you’re uncomfortable unhooking all the power cables inside the case yourself and hooking up a new power supply to it, suggest it to a tech and have them do it.

If you specifically tell the guys in a computer store that’s all you want done, they may just do it for free. It’d only take 5 minutes to try, and then you wouldn’t have to go buy a power supply and return it if that’s not what turns out to be shot.

Assuming the P/S thing doesn’t work the second mostly likely hosed component is the RAM. It doesn’t like excess power at all and tends to die much more easily than the rest of the computer.

Worst case senerio is that the mobo and CPU died, as well as the hard drive. Hard to tell though. Try the power supply thing first, as it’s the most likely.

Good luck.
