If you are a Windows 10 user, it’s important to check if the KB5001716 update is installed on your computer. This update aims to prompt users to consider upgrading to newer Windows versions, including Windows 11.

Microsoft automatically rolls out this update to non-managed Windows 10 devices with automatic updates enabled. The company stresses on its support page that unsupported devices are at risk of security threats due to lack of crucial security updates. Microsoft recommends upgrading to newer Windows versions to ensure continued support.

The KB5001716 update is compatible with all versions of Windows 10, ranging from version 1809 to the latest version, 22H2. Once installed, this update initiates two significant changes:

  1. Devices nearing or at the end of support may receive automatic downloads and installations of feature updates.
  2. Users could receive periodic prompts encouraging them to upgrade. The next update push is expected by April 2024.

Although Windows offers a “keep Windows 10” option, Microsoft employs prompts to motivate users to upgrade. There are indications of notifications if the device does not meet the hardware requirements for Windows, suggesting potential upgrade offers.

It’s unclear whether Windows Update will push the latest Windows 10 version or Windows 11 when a device reaches the end of support. Users who wish to control their operating system version can utilize tools like InControl or adjust settings in the Group Policy Editor or Registry.

In conclusion, running a supported operating system version is generally recommended. While some users may appreciate upgrade reminders, others prefer to have control over their system. It’s crucial for users to make informed decisions considering their preferences and device compatibility.
