Microsoft has confirmed that the classic version of Outlook for Windows will not be phased out until at least 2029, bringing relief to users of the application.

The recent introduction of the new Outlook for Windows raised concerns among users of the classic version. Microsoft stated its plans to replace the current Mail and Calendar app with this new application, alongside the classic Outlook software.

Initially, there was uncertainty regarding the future of the classic Outlook app as Microsoft outlined its transition plan.

However, Microsoft has now clarified that users can continue utilizing the classic Outlook version until at least 2029.

The Transition Plan for Outlook for Windows

The migration to the new Outlook for Windows and the retirement of the classic Outlook app will occur in three distinct stages. The current phase, as per Microsoft, is the “Opt in” stage.

During this phase, both individual and business users have the choice to transition to the new Outlook app. The new app will not be automatically activated, requiring users to opt for it by using the “try the new Outlook” option within the classic app.

Users can easily switch back to the classic app through a toggle button available in both applications. Microsoft also provides a feedback mechanism for users reverting to the classic Outlook app.

Upon the new Outlook app reaching general availability, it will move out of the preview phase, and users will be eligible for regular technical support.

The subsequent stage involves a shift from opt-in to opt-out, making the new Outlook app the default selection on Windows systems. Microsoft commits to giving a minimum of 12 months’ notice before this shift occurs in production environments.

Throughout the opt-out phase, users retain the option to continue using the classic Outlook app if they so choose.

The final stage, known as cutover, eliminates the option to switch back to the classic Outlook app. Consequently, all new installations of Outlook from Microsoft 365 subscriptions will feature the new Outlook for Windows.

Microsoft guarantees ongoing support for existing installations of the classic Outlook app until at least 2029.

Users will receive advanced notification, with at least a year’s notice, before progressing to the third and final stage of the transition plan.

By 2024, the new Outlook client is expected to replace Mail and Calendar. Critics have expressed concerns about the new Outlook client, highlighting its reduced features compared to the classic version. Moreover, reports indicate that the new app is slower and includes advertisements, unlike the ad-free classic app.

Competitor Proton has alleged that Microsoft’s new Outlook app functions as a data collection tool.
