Apple has commenced the release of the latest iOS updates for users owning iPhone 8 and newer models. iOS and iPadOS 16.3 bring a range of updated features and adjustments, which we will explore below.

Enhanced Security with Security Keys

One of the noteworthy additions in the iOS 16.3 update is the incorporation of Security Keys, a contemporary form of passwordless identity verification technology gaining popularity. These Security Keys, as mentioned by Cnet, do not replace user passwords but serve as an additional layer of security through two-factor authentication. Developed by the FIDO Alliance, consisting of major tech players like Apple, the iOS version of Security Keys functions only with FIDO Alliance-certified Security Keys.

Improved Emergency SOS Function

Apple has attracted attention by integrating Satellite communication technology into the latest iPhone models. The Emergency SOS feature in iPhone 14s can now reach emergency services even in areas outside cellular network coverage using satellite signals. With the new update, making accidental emergency calls is reduced by requiring users to press and hold the side button and a volume button simultaneously to initiate an emergency call after a countdown.

Additional Enhancements

Apart from the key updates, iOS 16.3 also includes various other improvements. These encompass updated wallpapers to commemorate Black History month and extended support for the 2nd Gen Apple HomePod.

Moreover, the update focuses on enhancing security measures by enabling Hardened Runtime to safeguard sensitive user data from unauthorized access. State management enhancements, addressing memory corruption issues, logic errors, and privacy concerns have been prioritized. The update also ensures better memory handling in the kernel to prevent unauthorized code execution with kernel privileges, thus fortifying security. Safari browser received updates to enhance cache handling against potential denial-of-service attacks. Furthermore, the Screen Time feature now emphasizes improved private data redaction to protect sensitive information and prevent data leaks.

Hardware is essential for running software, and if you are an iOS user, you might find interest in learning about the rigorous quality control processes undertaken in iPhone production.
