I have some files that I used EFS to protect some time ago. The problem is that I’ve since formatted and I don’t know the password or key or whatever it’s called. Is there a program to crack this?
It can be something where you boot to linux to do it or something I have some experience with that (thanks to your administrator password recovery article, thanks!). I just really need to get to this data.
Erg… I’m afraid that you’re pretty much out of luck. EFS encryption is pretty secure, and rightly so. Not much of a point in encrypting something if it’s easy to crack, eh?
It’s maybe doable if you still were running the same Windows install, but since you’re not then half of the keys are gone. You’d have to go to the NSA to have any hope of getting this data back. (If someone knows otherwise, PLEASE tell me)
