Mozilla Firefox 100.0.1 is a minor update aimed at fixing bugs in the Picture-in-Picture mode and enhancing process isolation on Windows devices.

Mozilla had originally planned to release this version on May 11, 2022, but the release got delayed for reasons that are currently unknown. However, it is anticipated to be rolled out soon.

The key enhancement in Firefox 100.0.1 focuses on strengthening the security sandbox for Windows devices. Mozilla highlights that the sandbox now blocks content processes on Windows from accessing Win32k APIs.

Previous releases have already brought security improvements to the Linux and Mac versions of Firefox. For instance, Firefox for Mac made changes in version 95 to prevent access to the WindowServer, thereby enhancing security and startup performance on Mac systems.

Similarly, Firefox 99 for Linux eliminated the connection from content processes to the X11 server to prevent attackers from exploiting the vulnerable X11 protocol.

The security enhancement in Firefox for Windows is significant as it restricts access to Win32k APIs for content processes, known to be commonly targeted by exploits. This limitation provides a strong security layer.

This improvement is currently being deployed to Windows 10 Creators Update and later versions, ensuring support for any compatible Windows 10 and Windows 11 installation running Firefox.

Mozilla is actively working on implementing this feature for Windows 8 and extending support for older versions of Windows 10.

The organization has shared a technical overview of the feature and its implementation on the Mozilla Hacks website.

Additionally, the Picture-in-Picture mode in Firefox 100 has received various upgrades. Notably, it now supports video captions and subtitles on many online video streaming platforms.

Firefox 100.0.1 addresses two bugs, with one specifically related to subtitle display:

  • Resolved issue with subtitles in Picture-in-Picture mode while using Netflix
  • Fixed problem where certain commands were inaccessible in the Picture-in-Picture window
