WhatsApp is set to release an update that will enable users to send higher-quality HD images. The messaging platform also has plans to support the transfer of HD videos in the near future.

If you have ever been frustrated by the quality of photos shared on WhatsApp, you are not alone. Fortunately, WhatsApp is making a significant improvement by allowing users to share higher-quality “HD” images.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on his Instagram broadcast channel, “Sharing photos on WhatsApp just got an upgrade. Now you can send in HD.”

Initially, the HD feature may not be available to all users, but Meta plans to gradually roll it out worldwide over the next few weeks. So, if you don’t have it yet, be patient.

Despite the introduction of the HD image feature, the image may still undergo slight compression by Android, iOS, or the web. However, the quality will undoubtedly be better than before.

When you send an image, you will notice a small HD gear icon. By selecting this icon, you can ensure that your image reaches the recipient in the highest possible quality. Recipients will also see the HD icon on images they receive via the HD feature.

According to WABetaInfo’s report on the beta version, tapping the HD button will open a “photo quality” menu, offering users two resolution options: standard quality (1600 x 1052) and HD quality (4096 x 2692).

Recipients with slow internet connections or limited storage space need not worry. They will have the option to either keep the standard quality version of the image or upgrade to HD.

All images sent using the HD feature will be protected through WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption, ensuring the same level of security as regular WhatsApp images.

In addition to HD image transfers, WhatsApp will soon also support the transfer of HD videos.
