Using Sodium as an Alternative to Gasoline

YouTuber and fact-checker Thunderf00t has been exploring the idea of using sodium as a solution to combat global warming. The concept revolves around using sodium as a fuel which, when burned with air, creates sodium hydroxide that could potentially have a cooling effect in the upper atmosphere. The goal is to either directly use sodium as a fuel source or as an additive in fuel to increase the aerosol emissions from vehicles and potentially lessen their environmental impact.

One challenge of using sodium as fuel is that it is solid at room temperature, so it would need to be delivered in pellet or liquid form. While this may pose some difficulties, as solidifying metal in a fuel system could cause issues, a solution lies in using a sodium-potassium alloy that remains liquid at manageable temperatures and has a mild tendency to ignite spontaneously.

Initial trials using ultrasonic evaporators faced setbacks due to the alloy’s conductivity and fire-prone nature. A subsequent experiment involved utilizing a standard automotive fuel injector from a petrol-based Ford Fiesta. By employing a suitable container, a three-way valve for fuel introduction, and an inert argon feed to prevent combustion in the air, delivering the liquid metal fuel into the injector seemed feasible.

Thunderf00t initially tested with ethanol and then progressed to pentane before eventually experimenting with the lively sodium-potassium alloy. After overcoming challenges with the high-speed video setup, Thunderf00t emphasizes the critical role of selecting appropriate materials when dealing with this potential liquid metal fuel, as it tends to ignite violently upon contact with incompatible materials. The thought of seeing this substance dispensed at a gas station is unsettling, given its unpredictable nature, but it certainly sparks curiosity.

While sodium-potassium alloy may not commonly appear in discussions, it remains an intriguing concept to ponder. To catch a glimpse of this unique substance in action, check out this fascinating video:
