The Linux Mint developer team recently launched a new version of the well-liked Linux distribution. Linux Mint 21.1 is a long-term support release, similar to Linux Mint 21. The latest version of Linux Mint brings changes to the appearance and functionality of the operating system, along with enhancements to core applications like Update Manager, Software Manager, and Driver Manager.

Users of Linux Mint 21 can now easily upgrade directly to the new Linux Mint 21.1 release. The team has provided detailed steps on the official organization blog to guide users through the upgrade process.

The upgrading steps are straightforward and do not require an in-depth understanding of Linux Mint upgrades. Here are the recommended steps:

  1. Back up your system using Timeshift. This snapshot can help restore the current OS state if the upgrade encounters issues. The Timeshift tool is available in the application menu.
  2. Disable the screensaver.
  3. If you have Cinnamon spices installed, upgrade them through System Settings.
  4. Launch the Update Manager on your system.
  5. Click on the Refresh button to search for updates.
  6. If the Update Manager shows a new “Upgrade to Linux Mint 21.1 Vera” option under Edit after the refresh,
    • If the update is not visible, ensure that you have the latest versions of mintupdate and mint-upgrade-info installed. Sometimes, these may not be available in all mirrors. Switching to the default repository can resolve this issue.
  7. Select that option and follow the on-screen instructions to upgrade to Linux Mint 21.1.
  8. Restart your computer after the upgrade process.

If you prefer the old classic look, you can revert the visual changes. Simply go to Themes and switch to Mint-Y-Legacy. You can also re-enable the screensaver if you had it enabled initially.

Most Linux Mint systems running version 21 should smoothly upgrade to version 21.1 without encountering any issues.
