In Kenya, the future lies in digital technology careers, yet women hold less than 30 percent of tech positions. Amid this disparity stands Ellen Waithira Karuga (Kamau), a trailblazer forging her path. Starting as a clerk to support her education, Karuga now spearheads the digital transformation of finance and HR workflows across Africa.
Karuga’s expertise in technology, especially in AI, security policy, database administration, and ERP systems, has earned her acclaim. Her technical prowess and AI knowledge have empowered her to lead projects that automate processes and enhance efficiency. Karuga’s focus on security policies bolster data protection, a crucial aspect in today’s digital landscape.
A self-proclaimed tech enthusiast, Karuga thrives on solving intricate problems with elegant solutions. Leveraging her programming skills in C++, Java, and PHP, she has developed impactful software for local government use. Her proficiency in database administration and ERP implementation has optimized business operations, integrating finance and HR functions effectively.
Despite the accolades, Karuga’s journey was rife with challenges. As the youngest of six siblings in a financially constrained household, she toiled her way through education, starting as a clerk due to financial constraints. Through sheer determination, she pursued certifications in computing courses, culminating in an IT degree, an MBA, and currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Management & Leadership.
Karuga’s vision extends beyond personal success; she aspires to establish an IT firm that mentors underrepresented women and youth in the tech sector, supported by her husband William Kamau and brother Jimmy. Recognizing the lack of diversity in tech, she aims to create a more inclusive economy by nurturing talent and fostering innovation.
