In today’s era of cloud-based services, tasks can be accomplished using just a web browser. This trend has made Chrome OS, which is tightly integrated with the Google Chrome browser, a popular choice as a web-centric operating system.

Despite Chrome OS being Linux-based at its core, it can only run on Google hardware like Chromebooks. In light of this limitation, those seeking an alternative may soon have the option to explore cloud computing on their laptops using Ubuntu Web.

Ubuntu Web OS Featuring Firefox Browser

Ubuntu Web is a fresh project that seeks to develop an operating system as an alternative to Chrome OS by harnessing the capabilities of Ubuntu Linux and Mozilla’s Firefox browser. Unlike Chrome OS, this system is Firefox-centric and potentially compatible with a wider range of computers.

Interestingly, the project is spearheaded by the same innovative developer, Rudra Saraswat, who recently introduced Ubuntu Unity Remix and Ubuntu Education (UbuntuEd).

At present, only the initial announcement has been made with no further details disclosed. The community is actively deliberating to select a lightweight graphical interface as the default option.

Allan Carvalho, a member of the project, states that Ubuntu Web intends to challenge Chrome OS using the Firefox browser.

While Ubuntu Web isn’t the first Linux contender aiming to rival Chrome OS, the past has seen attempts such as Apricity OS and Cub Linux, which unfortunately are no longer active. As of now, there isn’t a direct competitor to Chrome OS, making it intriguing to observe if Ubuntu Web can fulfill its objectives.

What are your thoughts on this new Web OS? Feel free to share your opinions in the comments below.
