Is Wearable Technology Really The Future?

Over the last few years, a new technological market has emerged being the wearable market. Up to now, it seems to be a Marmite kind of story: some people love wearable technology and see it as the future whereas others are not totally keen on the idea and are still unsure about them. For this reason, I thought it would be helpful to try and answer the question whether wearable technology is really the future. Here are the main reasons for and against.

The Big Companies Are Investing

Google, Apple, Huawei, Sony, LG, Motorola, Fitbit and Jawbone are all plummeting funds into this new market. Forgetting everything else, this has to mean something. Rarely do you see the likes of Google and Apple making brand new diversifying products. For example, the last time Apple made a diversified product for a brand new market was the iPad and how well did that do? The big companies must have seen a real area of capitalisation for the wearable market and it seems that the sooner they plummeted products into this market, the more successful they would turn out to be. I guess Apple have lost a bit of steam already in this market due to the delayed release of the Apple Watch.

Wearables Are Useful

Above all, the wearable technology must have a purpose. For Apple Watch and Android Wear, they help to compliment the phones by letting you interact with your phone straight from your wrist. For some people, this is great since it means they do not have to get their phone out every time they feel it vibrate in their pocket. For others, it means they can decipher through lots of information that would have taken some time on their phone is a few seconds on their watch. It does seem that the wearable’s functions are good.

Are They Attractive (Yet)?

However, the main argument for those that do not like wearables is the fact they do not look that good (yet). Take the LG G watch, Sony Smartwatch 3 and all of the early iterations of the Sony Smartwatch, Samsung’s line-up of watches and more – they are clunky, big, geeky looking and, more important, do not look like a classic and stylish timepiece.

However, there is the Motorola 360 and Huawei Watch that both look stunning. So, maybe at the moment, the market is not looking too good. But, for the future, there is a real promise from some great watches and wearables that will provide useful information and look stylish too.
