OnePlus 5 Latest News and Rumours

Dubbed one of the best phones of 2016 in terms of cost, the OnePlus 3T really caused a stir in 2016 by Image may contain: sky, bridge, outdoor and wateroffering flagship specs at a mid-range price. This is typically why OnePlus smartphones are often called the ‘flagship’ killers.

Although the OnePlus 3T came out roughly six months ago, the rumours and news circulating their new itteration of a smartphone, the OnePlus 5, are very strong indeed. Here is a bullet point list of the main news and rumours round OnePlus’s new phone.

  • Release Date – Mid June – The latest rumours suggest that the OnePlus 5 will be released in mid-June.
  • Called the OnePlus 5– OnePlus have confirmed it already that the new phone will not be called the OnePlus 4 but the OnePlus 5. This is because the chinese manufacturer deems the number 4 to be unlucky.
  • Snapdragon 835 – Again, OnePlus have confirmed, along with Qualcomm, that the OnePlus 5 will feature Qualcomm’s latest and fastest Snapdragon 835, which is only featured in the Samsung Galaxy S8 up to now. For many people, this is very exciting since it will maintain ‘flagship’ specs.
  • 2k Screen Resolution – OnePlus phones, in the past, have featured a 1080p screen – for the majority of people, this is enough. However, with a push into VR by many companies, OnePlus are looking to increase the resolution to 2k, so that the phone is VR capable.
  • 4,000mAh batter – This is just a rumour. However, upon seeing the 3T gain 400mAh extra on the 3, it would be no surprise to see the OnePlus 5 have a bigger battery too (especially if the screen resolution has increased). At the very minimum, we do not expect the phone’s battery to be any smaller than the already large 3,400mAh battery in the OnePlus 3T.
  • Dual Rear Camera – Following the likes of Apple with the iPhone 7 Plus, the OnePlus is expected to have dual rear cameras at the back, which will allow better focusing and better quality images on the whole. An example of a picture taken with the OnePlus 5 is with the image at the top of the article, where the right hand side is rumoured to be the OnePlus 5, as opposed to the OnePlus 3T on the left.
  • 3.5mm Headphone Jack Stays – Like Samsung and LG have done, OnePlus will retain the 3.5mm headphone jack, providing a USP to compete directly against the iPhone, potentially as having more features and a better usability.
  • 6GB Ram – There were early rumours that the ram would, in fact, increase to 8GB. However, it is expected that 6GB of ram is enough for the OnePlus 5.
  • 64GB and 128GB Versions – In terms of storage, the amount we still be the same when compared to the OnePlus 3T. However, we do hear some rumours that there will be a special 8GB Ram/256GB storage variant that could come out either on the launch day or later.
  • Pricing – Based on the specs above, we are expected to see the cost of the OnePlus 5 increase as opposed to the 3T when it came out, especially if there is an 8GB variant. This is unfortunate. However, it will still be priced well below the likes of the Samsung S8 and LG G6.
