Are Videos Killing Online Content?

The human race can be seen to be at a point in time where technology (and everything else, for that matter) is exponentially getting better. You only have to look at the original iPhone around ten years go and compare it to the iPhone 6s to really see how far we have come in ten years let alone one hundred. Another area that has always been around since the internet started has been online content. Of course it has, considering that the internet as we know it evolves around online content and the vast majority of profit Google makes is through AdWords and Adsense which relies on online content to work. What is interesting, though, is the fact that the way we digest information is seemingly changing. Instead of reading newspapers every morning or even watching the news on televisions, people are now getting updates on their watches and smartphones and seeing small news video clips on tweets and more.

For this reason, where are we heading?

It is an interesting question to answer. YouTube is booming and has been ever since Google purchased them several years ago. When people want to digest information, video is the preferred solution. Watching reviews, videos are better and we all know the majority of people would rather watch movies than read books.

Therefore, it can be seen that videos are killing online content. We are coming to a point online where videos might start to be even more important to SEO as content is.

For example, most news reports will have embedded videos in them wrapped by the text of the story and the same can be said for many different areas that bloggers are currently blogging about. It does seem videos are going to be the preferred solution to digest information online: especially with the fact improving technologies is also making more and more people have access to devices that have internet connections and can play video without trouble.

Will it actually kill online content like the laptop could be seen to kill the desktop PC? I am not sure. If Google can incorporate an algorithm which determines how useful a video is on search engines (like they kind of do already with YouTube, although that is based on views, comments and more to determine the video’s importance), then we can expect to see videos to take the online world by storm.

It’s a food for thought at least. 20 years ago, people could not believe they would be reading news articles on electronic screens instead of newspapers. 100 years ago, people could not believe they would be transporting around on things called ‘cars’ instead of pedalling on bicycles or riding on horses. Who says in ten years from now, we will look back and say people could not believe they were watching videos to digest any type of information on the internet and that content was dying online? The way the human race is going in terms of inventing and innovating, this could very well be a possibility.
