Microsoft has rolled out a new pop-up in Windows 11 to highlight the Windows Backup app, initially released for Windows 10 and 11 last year. This app enables users to back up essential files, folders, settings, and credentials. It’s important to mention that the backup feature is restricted and utilizes OneDrive’s cloud storage, which offers only 5 GB of free space. This limitation could pose challenges for users managing a large volume of files in certain directories.
Microsoft Introduces Persistent Pop-Ups for Windows Backup App
A recent update from Microsoft has initiated persistent pop-ups notifying users that their PC lacks complete backup. The message urges users to immediately back up their credentials and folders. Despite the notification, the Windows Backup app excludes the backup of local folders, creating frustration among users. Dismissing the notification will temporarily halt the pop-up, but it may resurface upon adjustments to specific settings.
TechRadar has proposed the integration of a Promo Center in Windows 11 to showcase features like the Windows Backup app in a less intrusive manner. Microsoft’s aggressive advertising strategies, evident through numerous ads in Windows 11 such as full-screen prompts for upgrades and Bing pop-ups in Google Chrome, have faced criticism. Improving the system experience rather than bombarding users with ads could enhance user satisfaction.
For PC backups, users can opt for free alternatives like Veeam Agent, Rescuezilla, or Macrium Reflect Free to store data on an external hard drive, reducing reliance on Microsoft’s restricted cloud storage.
