Windows 11 has just been released and gamers are curious about the gaming performance on this new operating system compared to Windows 10. The question on everyone’s mind is whether upgrading to Windows 11 will enhance gaming experience on their PCs that are primarily used for gaming.
Testing Windows 11 Gaming Performance
I put Windows 11 to the test by playing some graphics-intensive games from my collection. My focus was on smooth frame rates and gameplay rather than graphics quality to identify any lag spikes or performance issues.
Red Dead Redemption 2
Despite a slow start-up due to the Rockstar launcher, the game ran smoothly on Windows 11. Interestingly, I experienced better FPS at High/Ultra settings compared to Medium/High settings in some sections. Performance dips were observed in crowded areas, which was similar to my experience on Windows 10.
Horizon Zero Dawn
After receiving patches from Guerrilla Games, the game now runs smoothly on Windows 11 compared to its initial poor performance. Although benchmark results still show the OS as Windows 10, the game performs well on Windows 11.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
Despite concerns due to past performance issues on Windows 10, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla runs satisfactorily on Windows 11. While achieving a constant 60 fps was challenging on both OS versions, the game stability has improved, especially in Photo and Online modes.
Far Cry 5
Surprisingly, Far Cry 5 performed exceptionally well on Windows 11 even on Ultra graphics settings, delivering a smooth 60FPS experience without any issues.
Forza Horizon 4
Forza Horizon 4 ran flawlessly on Windows 11 at high settings with a steady 60FPS frame rate, demonstrating good performance and loading times.
Windows 11 Gaming Experience Summary
Most games with DRM that put a strain on the CPU showed satisfactory performance on Windows 11. Updating graphics drivers before playing games is recommended to optimize performance, especially for users with Nvidia RTX or AMD Radeon RX GPUs. While Microsoft VBS may affect gaming performance negatively, disabling this feature can be considered if gaming experience is compromised.
Overall, Windows 11 offers a similar gaming experience to Windows 10, with the potential for improved game loading times through features like DirectStorage. It’s important to update drivers and consider system settings for optimal gaming performance on Windows 11.
