Over time, WhatsApp has faced controversies over its policies and handling of private information, prompting users to switch to more secure messaging apps like Signal. Following a hefty fine of €225 million, the platform is now compelled to revise its privacy policy.

WhatsApp states that the update does not alter its data collection practices but is aimed at complying with the transparency standards set by European Union privacy regulators.

The revised policy will first take effect in many European nations and is anticipated to extend globally. The European Union’s top privacy regulator for Meta and other social media companies, the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC), issued the record fine due to WhatsApp’s failure to adequately inform users about its data collection methods.

A WhatsApp spokesperson reassured users with the following statement:

“This update does not change our commitment to user privacy or how we operate, including how we handle your data, whether it is used or shared with Meta. Worldwide, we safeguard all personal messages through end-to-end encryption, ensuring that not even WhatsApp can access them.”
