So I am looking for a new computer for gaming primarily and it seems that most computers being sold these days are laptops and tablets.
Tablets are fine for casual apps, but not so good for Call of Duty, I guess my choice is to see what kind of laptop I can get for my gaming needs. I should point out that I do like to game, but I am not hardcore. My needs may not fit someone who wants the absolute latest technology for games so they can play all day long.
What should I be looking for in a gaming laptop. There are sites that review laptops like this one. I have basically applied what I would be looking for in a desktop into what is being offered in a laptop that won’t break my budget.
Ram
Get as much as possible, this will not only make the games and system run smoothly, but last a bit longer than a system with lower ram. If you can afford it, get 16gb minimum and go from there.
Hard drive
I am downloading all my games now, but I’m not playing that many at a time. I figure a terabyte or a little under will do fine for this. If you want to do other things like video on the computer, get as much as you can afford or keep external drives handy. I have a bout two 2TB drives around my house for extra space and backups.
Processor
Most Intel processors can handle about 90% of the games on the market. Having said that, the only processor I would look at for gaming is the Intel Core i7-4790K Processor- BX80646I74790K. You can go cheaper here if you want to spend elsewhere.
Videocard
This is what makes the difference in my eyes. You will get the most bang for the buck with a Sapphire Radeon R9 290 4GB GDDR5 DUAL DVI-D/HDMI/DP TRI-X OC Version PCI-Express Graphics Card 11227-00-40G. For the most enjoyment, try to get one with a minimum 2gb on board ram, 3gb or higher is better but 2 will do.
Screen size
This is more of a personal pick. A 17 inch screen can be great, but makes the system heavy to transport. While a 14 inch might be a bit too small, it will much lighter to carry around. I will probably give in to a 17 inch screen and play on a kitchen table for the most part.
The rest of the hardware may not matter as much, I don’t care about battery life since I am mostly going to be in one location while playing and plugged in, and I’ll be using my own keyboard and mouse. WiFi, Ethernet depends more on my internal network. Again I would probably be wired in for faster play and downloading.
All together this should run about $1,000 to $1,500, depending on how much RAM I can get.
If you’re interested in purchasing a gaming laptop, here are some great recommendations available on amazon.
What do you think, too much or too little. Should I be breaking the bank?
