Following a delay in the release date for Ubuntu 20.04 and 18.04, the Ubuntu team has now launched Ubuntu 20.04.1. This initial point update for Ubuntu 20.04 LTS was released on April 23, 2020, bringing several new features and improvements.
Additionally, the team has introduced point versions for seven official Ubuntu flavors, including Kubuntu 20.04.1 LTS, Ubuntu Budgie 20.04.1 LTS, Ubuntu MATE 20.04.1 LTS, Lubuntu 20.04.1 LTS, Ubuntu Kylin 20.04.1 LTS, Ubuntu Studio 20.04.1 LTS, and Xubuntu 20.04.1 LTS.
As a long-term release, Ubuntu 20.04 and its variations for Desktop, Server, Cloud, and Core will be supported until 2025. Furthermore, users have the option to extend security support through ESM (Extended Security Maintenance) for a fee.
What’s New in Ubuntu 20.04.1?
The Ubuntu 20.04 point update primarily focuses on fixing bugs within packages, security enhancements, hardware improvements, and updates to installation media. Many users await these updates to ensure they have the most stable and issue-free version of the new Ubuntu LTS release.
This update also addresses the BootHole bug, which impacted several Linux distributions utilizing the GRUB2 bootloader with Secure Boot. For a detailed list of bugs resolved from Ubuntu 20.04 to 20.04.1, refer to the change summary available here.
Notably, Ubuntu 20.04.1 does not introduce a new Hardware Enablement Stack (HWE), usually included in the first point release. Consequently, 20.04.1 is shipped with the same Linux kernel 5.4 as in 20.04.
Following this release, users on the previous Ubuntu 18.04 LTS will soon receive notifications prompting them for an automatic upgrade to 20.04.1 LTS. If you prefer to upgrade your Ubuntu 18.04 or 19.10 to 20.04.1 immediately, you can proceed with a force upgrade.
