Transferring files from Android to PC or Mac

There are various options for transferring files from an Android device to a PC or Mac. Below are some commonly used methods that you can choose from based on your preferences.

Using a USB Cable

The traditional approach to file transfer involves using a USB cable that comes with your Android device. Apart from charging your device, this USB cable can also be used to transfer files between your Android device and a PC or Mac.

  1. Connect your Android device to your PC or Mac using the USB cable.
  2. Grant Allow access on your Android device. (For newer Android versions, select “File transfer” in the USB Preferences menu)
  3. In Windows PC, access your device through My Computer; on Mac, your device will be visible on the desktop.
  4. Simply Click and drag the desired files from Android to PC or Mac.

Via Bluetooth

Bluetooth is commonly used for file transfers between smartphones and tablets but can also be used for transferring files between these devices and PCs or Macs.

  1. Enable Bluetooth on your PC, Mac, and Android device.
  2. Access the Bluetooth menu on your computer.
  3. Search for available devices and pair them with your Android device. (For Mac users, enable Bluetooth Sharing)
  4. On your Android device, navigate to the file or image to be transferred, tap Share, and choose Bluetooth.
  5. In Windows, right-click the Bluetooth icon in the taskbar and select “Receive a file“; for Mac, the file will be automatically saved in the Downloads folder.

Google Drive

Among the cloud-based storage solutions, Google Drive is one of the most popular options. Dropbox is another alternative, providing accessibility to your files from any connected device.

  1. Open the Google Drive app on your Android device.
  2. Click the + button, then hit “Upload,” and select the files for transfer. They will be uploaded to the cloud.
  3. On your PC or Mac, access the official Google Drive website.
  4. Sign in to your Google account.
  5. Locate the uploaded files from your Android device.
  6. Click the three dots at the top-right of the file.
  7. Select Download.


Snapdrop facilitates file sharing between devices connected to the same Wi-Fi network, making it a convenient choice for transferring files.

  1. Download the official Snapdrop app on your Android device.
  2. Visit the official Snapdrop website on your PC or Mac.
  3. Connect your Android device and PC or Mac to the same Wi-Fi network.
  4. Launch the app on your Android device, and select your PC or Mac from the screen.
  5. Select the files you wish to transfer.

FTP Server

Setting up an FTP server is another method of transferring files from Android to PC or Mac. However, this method is more suitable for users familiar with File Transfer Protocol.

  1. Install Solid Explorer on your Android device.
  2. Tap the three-line menu icon at the top left (hamburger menu).
  3. Scroll down and select FTP Server.
  4. Access the File Explorer on your PC, enter the server address displayed on your Android device (starting with “ftp://192“), and view your Android files.
  5. For Mac users, go to Finder, click Go on the top menu bar, choose Connect to Server, and enter the same server address as provided in the earlier step.
