On Wednesday afternoon, Reddit’s mobile and web applications experienced a notable outage, causing over 150,000 users to express their dissatisfaction on Downdetector. The issues began around 1:30 PM in San Francisco.
Users attempting to visit Reddit’s homepage received an error message that read, “Server error. Try again later.”
According to the company’s status page, Reddit.com was listed as being in a “degraded state” at about 1:16 PM PT.
However, roughly an hour later, Reddit announced that its systems were back to normal functionality.
An in-depth analysis of the issue revealed that the outage was primarily caused by a software update that had been implemented.
“Earlier today we shipped an update that unintentionally impacted platform stability,” said Reddit spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt in an email to the press. “We deployed a fix and are back up and running.”
The status on Reddit’s page was updated at 2:16 PM to indicate that the issues had been resolved following the fix.
While some users may still experience accessibility problems, the company has assured that services will be gradually restored.
As stated on its status page, Reddit has only dealt with a few major outages in the last 90 days. Although some users might still face challenges, the organization anticipates that normal access will be restored soon.
