Authorities in Punjab have set new school hours to protect students from the rising health threats associated with worsening pollution levels. In response to the persistent air quality challenges, the Punjab Environment Protection Department has issued immediate directives for educational institutions to take necessary precautions.
To combat the increasing health risks linked to deteriorating smog conditions, Punjab officials have updated school timings to prioritize student safety. The Punjab Environment Protection Department has rolled out urgent guidelines for schools and colleges, urging them to implement suitable measures in light of the heightened air pollution levels.
On Wednesday, October 23rd, 2024, the Punjab Environmental Protection Authority announced the updated school timetable. Starting from October 28th through January 31st, 2025, schools will commence classes at 8:45 AM. To further safeguard students, school administrators are recommended to conduct assemblies indoors to minimize their exposure to poor outdoor air quality.
Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities, keep doors and windows closed to reduce the impact of pollution, and wear masks when they need to be outside. Vehicle owners are encouraged to maintain their vehicles properly to help decrease emissions. Additionally, all firework displays are prohibited until the end of January 2025 under these regulations.
According to recent findings by IQAir, Lahore has once again been designated as the most polluted city in the world, with an Air Quality Index reading of 193. This highlights the urgent concerns regarding air quality and its implications for public health.
Health professionals are particularly distressed, urging those with respiratory conditions—such as asthma and allergies—to take extra measures to safeguard their health during this ongoing air quality crisis.
