ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has officially authorized the establishment of new international airports in Sukkur and Muzaffarabad, aimed at boosting connectivity and meeting the demands of expatriates.
The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has initiated preliminary work on both projects, which are anticipated to be completed within the next five years. A specialized committee has been tasked with overseeing the land acquisition process, and initial project activities are already underway with the Works and Development Department.
These airports are projected to require significant investment, totaling billions of rupees, and are expected to become essential parts of Pakistan’s expanding air travel network. The Sukkur International Airport aims to meet the rising transit demands of upper Sindh, while the Muzaffarabad International Airport in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) will greatly improve access to the area.
Responding to Public and Political Support
The Muzaffarabad airport project particularly reflects the long-standing desires of overseas Pakistanis, many of whom have Kashmiri heritage.
“The airport in Muzaffarabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), has been a long-standing demand of overseas Pakistanis, especially those of Kashmiri origin.”
Support from British lawmakers of Kashmiri descent has significantly bolstered these efforts, with direct appeals made to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
In response, the federal government has reaffirmed its commitment and has also begun a feasibility study for an additional airport in Mirpur. These initiatives are part of a broader policy shift aimed at improving services for expatriates, such as relaxed age limits for employment and specific educational quotas for their children.
Expert Consultation and Economic Potential
As part of its strategic development framework, the PAA is currently in the process of selecting consultancy firms.

This effort aims to ensure compliance with international standards during both the planning and construction phases.
Once operational, the airports are expected to invigorate local economies, create job opportunities, and improve Pakistan’s transportation infrastructure. Officials stress that this initiative extends beyond logistical advancements; it signifies a commitment to fostering inclusive growth and actively engaging the diaspora.
