Opera’s latest Dev Channel build now allows users to personalize their speed dial tiles by setting custom images. This feature gives you the flexibility to customize your browser experience.
Many browsers typically limit tile customization to changing the name and URL of the shortcut. However, Opera now offers the unique option of setting custom images for tiles, which has been a feature in Vivaldi for some time and was one of the first browsers to introduce it.
How to Set Custom Images for Tiles in Opera Browser
To set a custom image for a tile in Opera, simply click on the new tab button and view your tiles. Right-click on a tile and select the “Set Custom Image” option. Opera will display thumbnails of recently downloaded images or images saved in the clipboard. If you can’t find the desired image, click on the “Show all Files” button to access your files via Windows Explorer and select the image you want. Opera will automatically assign the chosen image as the tile’s thumbnail. To revert to the original image, right-click on the tile and choose “Remove custom image.”
One limitation of this feature is that Opera automatically crops images, which may affect the appearance based on the image’s dimensions, necessitating adjustments in an image editor.
For fans of speed dials and the Group Speed Dial extension, custom images for tiles offer a practical and visually appealing feature. Whether you prefer web page thumbnails or logos, this customization can enhance your browsing experience.
The experiment in opera://flags is named Speed Dial Custom Image and is enabled by default but can be disabled to remove the option from the tiles’ context menu.

Opera Boosts Browser Speed by 16%
In a recent blog post, Opera announced a 16% improvement in web page rendering speed and request handling. These enhancements are attributed to Profile Guided Optimization (PGO) and Link Time Optimization (LTO), which optimize frequently used parts of the program. Additionally, Opera has enhanced its graphics components to deliver a 14% performance boost in games, animations, and web apps by leveraging GPU capabilities effectively.
These performance enhancements benefit both Opera and Opera GX users by offloading graphical tasks to the GPU, freeing up the CPU for other operations. Despite these improvements, some users may not notice a significant difference in browser performance, even with hardware acceleration enabled.
