OpenAI has unveiled a new capability for ChatGPT called “Deep Research,” designed to assist users in navigating intricate and comprehensive research tasks across various domains including finance, science, policy, and engineering. Unlike typical chatbot interactions, this deep research approach prioritizes delivering precise, well-sourced information by assessing multiple references over an extended duration.

At present, this feature is available exclusively to ChatGPT Pro users, with a limit of 100 inquiries per month. OpenAI has plans to roll it out to Plus and Team users in the near future, followed by access for Enterprise users at a later stage. However, the company has not provided a definitive timeline for its release in the UK, Switzerland, or the European Economic Area.

To use this functionality, users can select “deep research” in the ChatGPT composer interface, enter their question, and even upload documents or spreadsheets. The time taken to receive a response can range from 5 to 30 minutes, with notifications sent to users once their research is completed. OpenAI emphasizes that each response will come with thorough citations and documentation to ensure transparency and facilitate verification.

The deep research tool is powered by OpenAI’s latest o3 model, specifically tailored for web browsing and data analysis. This model has been trained using reinforcement learning to boost its reasoning skills and enhance search precision. In benchmarking assessments, it outperformed rivals like Gemini Thinking and Grok-2, achieving a 26.6% accuracy rating on the demanding Humanity’s Last Exam dataset.

Despite these improvements, OpenAI is aware of certain limitations. Deep research may occasionally yield inaccuracies, misinterpret credible sources, and struggle with report formatting. Furthermore, as AI-generated content becomes more prevalent, users are advised to critically assess the information rather than accepting it at face value.

Looking forward, OpenAI plans to enhance the deep research feature by integrating embedded images, data visualizations, and connections to subscription-based and proprietary data sources. It remains to be seen whether this tool will effectively compete with established search engines like Google.
