From Istanbul to Silicon Valley — Meet Omer Algur, the Software Engineer Crafting Experiences from VR to Web, One Game at a Time

From tinkering with game code in Istanbul to becoming a significant force in the gaming world, Omer Algur has turned his passion into impactful innovations, leading the charge in developing technologies that reshape the industry’s future.

Today, Algur commands an expansive portfolio that encompasses augmented and virtual reality (AR and VR), mobile, and desktop platforms.

Algur’s early fascination with gaming began at home. “My dad is an avid gamer,” he recalls. “I’d sneak out of bed at night to watch him play StarCraft and Age of Mythology. That’s when I realized games could be more than just a pastime.”

This love for interactive worlds was more than just a childhood whim—it planted the seeds of a career that would take him from bedroom modder to a Senior Software Engineer at the cutting edge of Web3 and Blockchain Technology.

Algur’s career began to take shape when he moved to the United States in 2008 to attend high school in Connecticut. He started creating mods for Mount & Blade while immersing himself in the technical side of game development.

Modding allowed Algur to experiment with coding, animation, and 3D modeling, but it also opened up his mind to the intricacies of game mechanics. By the time he graduated from high school, Algur knew that game development was his future.

Pursuing this dream, Algur enrolled at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, majoring in Game Design and Interactive Media. It was during these years that Algur’s talent for bridging creative ideas and technical implementation began to stand out.

He created Light Weaver, an innovative game that went on to win Best Game at the university’s Spring Show and secured second place at the B.O.S.S. Awards.

Shortly before graduating, Algur got his first industry break with Vivid Vision, a startup focused on using virtual reality for medical applications.

“I began working at Vivid Vision as a software engineer, developing VR games aimed at treating eye conditions like amblyopia and strabismus. This experience was profoundly rewarding, as it combined my programming skills with the opportunity to make a positive impact on people’s health.”

From Vivid Vision, Algur moved on to Playchemy, working alongside Ed Annunziata, the legendary creator of Ecco the Dolphin. It was here that he began delving into emerging technologies like blockchain long before it became a buzzword in the gaming industry.

At its core, blockchain operates as a decentralized ledger distributed across multiple computers, where each transaction is recorded in a chain of secure, interlinked “blocks.” Once a block is validated, it becomes a permanent, tamper-resistant part of the chain. This design makes blockchain ideal for applications requiring transparency, security, and data integrity.

“My most significant contribution was to a mobile application that visualized characters users could buy and trade online, utilizing blockchain technology to maintain a public ledger for tracking wallets. I built a dual backend system to synchronize our servers with blockchain data, optimizing performance and activity tracking.”

His growing expertise in game development soon made him a sought-after talent in the industry, culminating in an exciting opportunity at the Laguna Games since 2022. Here, Algur found himself at the forefront of a groundbreaking project—Crypto Unicorns.

This award-winning blockchain-based game was not just another addition to the gaming landscape; it represented a new frontier where players could earn, trade, and interact with digital assets within a vibrant ecosystem.

The success of Crypto Unicorns isn’t just measured in accolades; it’s also reflected in the numbers. Under Algur’s guidance, the game saw a 20% increase in user retention and a 15% reduction in downtime. His knack for balancing technical challenges with user experience made him an invaluable asset to the project.

But it wasn’t always smooth sailing. Algur’s career has been marked by moments of uncertainty and rapid industry shifts. Moving through various platforms—from VR and AR to blockchain—required constant adaptation and learning.

As a passionate game developer with a deep belief in the transformative power of games, Algur is committed to continuously pushing his boundaries and taking on more challenging projects:  “I plan to continue improving by challenging myself with increasingly complex projects and roles. My goal is to develop games that bring joy to people in various ways—whether by entertaining them, providing educational value, offering therapeutic benefits, or even enabling them to earn income. I believe games have the power to impact lives positively, and I aim to contribute to that legacy.”

Looking ahead, Algur sees Web3 as a gateway to a new era in gaming. He envisions a future where games aren’t just played but lived—where players have real influence over the game world and even its economy.

For this visionary software engineer, success transcends titles and accolades. Guided by his father’s enduring wisdom—’Do your best; as long as you do your best, it’s okay’—he navigates the complexities of the tech world with humility and resilience, staying grounded through both the triumphs and challenges of his career.
