Puppy Linux is an efficient and speedy Ubuntu-derived operating system known for its compact size. It has earned a spot on the list of best lightweight Linux distributions.
After a gap of over eighteen months, the team behind Puppy Linux has introduced version 9.5, also known as Fossapup64 9.5. This latest iteration is the first one based on the current Ubuntu 20.04 LTS version named “Focal Fossa.”
Fossapup64 is constructed using both Ubuntu Focal Fossa DEB (64-bit) packages and Puppy Pets packages, ensuring binary compatibility with Ubuntu and access to its repositories.
In terms of technical enhancements, Puppy Linux 9.5 has upgraded its Linux kernel from version 4.19.23 to the newest long-term version, 5.4.53.
Regarding software components, similar to Puppy 8.0, Puppy 9.5 comes equipped with the default JWM window manager, ROX file manager, Palemoon web browser, Hexchat, Quickpet, Osmo Calendar, Abiword Word Processor, Claws mail client, as well as media players like MPV, Deadbeef, and Gogglesmm.
Furthermore, Fossapup64 9.5 boasts several puppy-specific applications like Pburn, PuppyPhone, Find’n’run, Take A Gif, Uextract, Packit, Dunst-config, Picom-gtk, Transtray, Janky Bluetooth, Change_kernels, JWMdesk, YASSM, Redshift, and SimpleGTKradio.
