The developers of Linux Mint, known as the third most popular Linux distribution by Distrowatch, have unveiled the Cinnamon edition of Linux Mint 21 “Vanessa.”
This latest release, based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, is an LTS (Long Term Support) version backed until 2027. Below are the key highlights of the release:
Linux Mint 21 “Vanessa” Features:
1. Blueman Replaces Blueberry
In Linux Mint 21, Blueman Bluetooth manager takes the place of Blueberry. Blueman utilizes the Bluez stack, an official Bluetooth protocol stack ensuring smooth operation of core Bluetooth layers. With a handy tray icon in the taskbar, Blueman offers more accessibility to features not found in Blueberry.
2. Process Monitor
The Process Monitor, as the name implies, detects background automated updates and snapshots. It automatically displays in the system tray when such tasks run, enhancing transparency about background processes.
3. Cinnamon 5.4
In Cinnamon 5.4, the Muffin Window Manager has been based on Mutter 3.36, enhancing the performance and stability of the desktop environment. This update is particularly beneficial for users with older hardware.
Muffin now uses GTK for rendering all windows instead of a mix of GTK and Metacity, resulting in more consistent window appearance. Additionally, window animations have been enhanced alongside minor UI tweaks.
Other Changes Include:
- Improvements in XApps
- Enhanced features in Sticky Notes
- Thumbnailers for AppImage, ePub, MP3, RAW, and Web
