The upcoming Windows 11 update for 2024 has sparked some uncertainty. While it is currently available for Copilot+ PCs, there remains no definitive timeline for when it will be accessible to the majority of existing Windows 11 devices.
At the moment, only ARM-based PCs qualify as Copilot+ devices, as Intel and AMD have not yet released their latest processors.
This situation is poised to shift for Intel in October 2024, coinciding with the launch of the Lunar Lake processors. Intel has recently announced these chips, promoting their “exceptional performance, innovative x86 energy efficiency, substantial graphic improvements, smooth application compatibility, enhanced security, and exceptional AI computing capabilities.”
Though benchmark scores are not available yet, the introduction of these processors marks a significant advancement in making Windows AI features available not just for ARM devices.
Windows on ARM faces various limitations, particularly concerning application compatibility. Many enthusiasts in the AI field appear to be anticipating new processors from AMD and Intel to expand their choices.
Intel has specified that its Core Ultra 200V series processors will be “capable of supporting Copilot+ PC features.” Furthermore, these features will be rolled out as part of a free update planned for November.
Did Intel inadvertently disclose the release month for Windows 11 version 24H2, or is this an entirely different update? Intel hasn’t provided clarity on this matter, and Microsoft continues to keep the release dates confidential.
Here are two possible scenarios for the release:
- Microsoft might release the update in late September as part of that month’s optional update, followed by an official rollout on the second Tuesday of October.
- Alternatively, Microsoft may unveil the feature update in late October as an optional update, making it widely available in November.
Intel is set to officially launch its processors on September 24, 2024, and over 20 manufacturers are reportedly gearing up to release devices, according to Intel.
Regarding features, Intel has outlined the following key benefits:
- Improved thermal management for quieter operation in slim designs.
- Longer battery life during everyday use.
- Built-in security measures to protect against malware and decrease vulnerabilities.
- Dedicated Intel Arc graphics for enhanced content creation and smoother gaming on the go.
- Rapid connectivity capabilities with Intel® Wi-Fi 7 (5 Gig).
- Support for connecting the PC to multiple displays, transferring files, and powering the PC through Thunderbolt Share.
- Instant wake and fast charging features.
- High sustainability standards with an EPEAT Gold certification.
Look out for the first benchmark results to be released in September; waiting for these could be beneficial before making any buying decisions.
AMD has not yet confirmed the launch date for its Strix Point processors, which will also receive Copilot+ PC certification from Microsoft.
