The world’s foremost streaming platform, Netflix, has announced plans to increase subscription costs in several countries, including the United States, Canada, Portugal, and Argentina.

Reason Behind the Increase

Netflix has stated that this price adjustment is vital to allow for reinvestment in the service, aimed at improving the user experience for its growing global audience.

  • In late 2024, Netflix gained 19 million new subscribers, resulting in significant growth within its user base.
  • The platform currently boasts 300 million paying subscribers worldwide, solidifying its position as a dominant player in the streaming industry.

Revised Pricing Structure

The upcoming price changes will impact nearly all of Netflix’s subscription plans in the US.

  • Ad-supported plan: $7.99/month (up by $1)
  • Basic ad-free plan: increasing from $15.49 to $17.99/month
  • Premium plan: rising from $22.99 to $24.99/month (up by $2)

Furthermore, governments in Argentina, Canada, and Portugal have reported price cuts. According to Netflix’s earnings report, these adjustments are essential to foster the company’s ongoing dedication to expanding its content library and enhancing its technology.

In a press statement, Netflix emphasized, “We will occasionally ask our members to pay a little more so that we can reinvest to further improve Netflix.”

Reasons for Growth

Despite the impending price increases, Netflix continues to experience strong subscriber growth. Key sporting events, such as the much-covered boxing match between influencer Jake Paul and former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, along with the much-anticipated premiere of the second season of the acclaimed South Korean series Squid Game, have significantly driven the rise in subscriptions.

Netflix has been actively broadening its content selection by incorporating more live events, including WWE shows, and securing broadcasting rights for the 2027 and 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cups.

Looking forward, Netflix plans to keep innovating and expanding its offerings. The streaming giant will introduce a new “Extra Member with Ads” tier in conjunction with the pricing adjustments.

As part of its ongoing initiative to reduce password sharing, Netflix will now permit ad-supported subscribers to add a second user outside their household for an additional fee.

Regardless of the forthcoming price hikes, Netflix remains optimistic about its market positioning. Rather than updating subscriber growth numbers every quarter, the company will prioritize announcing key milestones. With the global demand for streaming content continuing to rise, Netflix still holds considerable potential for expansion, currently accounting for only 10% of TV viewing in its operational markets.
