Every version of Windows eventually comes to an end. For Windows 11, this happens two years after it is made available to the public.
- Microsoft will cease all security updates and any further updates for that particular version.
- Microsoft may automatically upgrade the system to a newer version that is still supported.
This method is beneficial for the majority of users. Systems that are no longer supported may have unresolved security issues, making them vulnerable to cyber threats, especially if they are regularly connected to the internet.
However, some users prefer to have control over when they upgrade their systems. This could be due to timing or testing preferences, making automatic updates undesirable for them.
Which versions of Windows 11 are affected: 21H2 and 22H2
Today, Microsoft announced that PCs running the original version or the first feature update of Windows 11 will be upgraded automatically next month.
What are these two versions?
- Windows 11, version 21H2 is intended for Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise systems only.
- Windows 11, version 22H2 is designed for Home and Pro users solely.
When will this take place?
The last update for these versions is set for October 2024, with the final security updates scheduled for release on October 8, 2024.
After October 8, 2024, Windows Update will automatically download and install Windows 11, version 23H2 on the affected devices.
Are there any exceptions?
Automatic updates will be applicable only to unmanaged devices, which generally means those not managed by an IT department.
Other possible exceptions include:
- Devices that fail to meet the minimum requirements for Windows 11.
- Devices with Windows Update turned off or configured to block automatic updates.
Manually upgrading to a new version of Windows is quite simple. Just go to Start > Settings > Windows Update, and click on the “Check for updates” button. If a newer version is available, it will be displayed, allowing you to download and install it.
If you have any difficulties, you can directly download the Windows 11 Installation Assistant or Windows 11 Installation Media from Microsoft.
Windows 11, version 23H2 brings the Copilot feature, closely resembling the online Copilot chat. While it may not be groundbreaking for Windows users, it also includes some new features like the Windows Backup app, which is designed to back up specific folders and data, alongside several minor updates.
