Microsoft has announced a significant price increase for its Xbox consoles and accessories, which takes effect immediately across the globe. This move comes on the heels of a similar decision by Sony regarding its PlayStation 5, which was revealed just a few weeks ago.
The cost of the Xbox Series S 512GB model has risen to $379.99 from its previous price of $299.99. Similarly, the 1TB version has increased to $429.99, up from $349.99. In an unexpected development, the digital edition of the Xbox Series X has seen its price jump $100 from its initial $449.99, now retailing at $549.99. The standard Xbox Series X has also been re-priced to $599.99, a $100 increase from $499.99. Additionally, the Xbox Series X 2TB Galaxy Special Edition has surged in price from $599.99 to $729.99.
For consumers in Europe and the United Kingdom, the new pricing is as follows: The Xbox Series S 512GB model is now £299.99 / €349.99, marking an increase of £50 / €50. The Xbox Series X is available for £499.99 / €599.99, which reflects an adjustment of £20 / €50. The 2TB Xbox Series X has experienced a price rise of £40 or €50, now costing £589.99 / €699.99.
In Australia, the revised prices are: Xbox Series S 512GB – AU$549.00, Xbox Series S 1TB – AU$599.00, Xbox Series X Digital – AU$749.00, Xbox Series X – AU$849.00, and the Xbox Series X 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition – AU$1,049.00.
Additionally, Microsoft has announced plans to raise the price of Xbox games to $80, noting that this change will not impact existing titles. According to Eurogamer, this adjustment affects both physical and digital formats. The company also plans to increase prices for select Xbox accessories, such as controllers and headsets.
In a statement to IGN, Microsoft remarked, “We understand that these changes are challenging, and they were made with careful consideration given market conditions and the rising cost of development. Looking ahead, we continue to focus on offering more ways to play more games across any screen and ensuring value for Xbox players.”
Gamers have expressed their frustration with both Sony and Microsoft for increasing prices on hardware that has been available for five years. Many fans believe Microsoft’s decision is misguided, especially given that Xbox ranks behind PlayStation in sales revenue. Furthermore, Nintendo has indicated that some forthcoming Switch 2 games may also be priced at $80 or even $90.
Ultimately, such price hikes predominantly impact consumers, who seldom see prices revert to earlier levels.
