Microsoft refers to ads as recommendations within Windows 11, which are visible in various areas of the operating system such as the Start menu, Settings app, Lock screen, File Explorer, and more. However, many users feel that these recommendations are not particularly useful, mainly featuring Microsoft Store apps.
Presently, Microsoft is experimenting with recommendations inside the Microsoft Store app itself. These suggestions are only displayed when using the app and conducting a search, showing two or three recommendations at a time.
In the most recent Windows 11 Insider build, we confirmed the existence of these recommendations independently. It is uncertain whether this feature will be incorporated into stable versions, but the likelihood is high.
These recommendations predominantly highlight games, endorsing popular titles like Homescapes, Forza Horizon 5, or Sea of Thieves 2024 Edition. Some of these games are free-to-play with in-game purchases, while others require an initial payment.
Microsoft views this as a method to promote games and apps to users, although it is unclear if Microsoft is being compensated for these placements.
When compared to Google Play and Apple’s App Store, the Microsoft Store contains fewer advertisements or sponsored content. Numerous Windows users choose to download software from sources other than the Microsoft Store due to its restricted variety.
