In a recent interview, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth shared that CEO Mark Zuckerberg, CPO Chris Cox, and himself are dedicating a significant amount of their time to working on artificial intelligence.

The key figures at Meta including founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, CPO Chris Cox, and CTO Andrew Bosworth are directing much of their efforts towards the company’s new AI unit. This specialized unit was established just two months ago in February and is currently engaged in developing generative AI technology.

CTO Andrew Bosworth unveiled this information during an interview with Nikkei Asia, where he also discussed Meta’s AI strategies. He explained that the AI initiatives being undertaken will have implications for the metaverse, the digital world Meta has been striving to achieve for some time now.

By introducing a dedicated AI department, Meta aims to simultaneously pursue its vision of the metaverse and stay competitive in the generative AI landscape, which is fiercely contested with industry giants such as Google and Microsoft. Meta recently unveiled an AI model capable of identifying specific items in images and has plans to enable advertisers to create compelling ads using AI technology.

Similar to industry models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, Meta has also developed its own substantial language model named LLaMa, which can answer questions and summarize lengthy documents.

Despite Meta’s Reality Labs division reporting a $13 billion loss in 2022, the company managed to offset this through substantial advertising revenues amounting to $116.61 billion.

According to CTO Bosworth, Meta can leverage these new generative AI tools to further enhance its advertising revenue stream. He mentioned that by utilizing AI capabilities, Meta can enable advertisers to tailor their ad campaigns with diverse images that resonate with different audiences, rather than relying on a single static image throughout.

Bosworth also pointed out that Meta envisions incorporating artificial intelligence within the Metaverse. He highlighted the potential for users to describe the world they wish to create while having a large language model generate that world, making content creation more accessible to a broader audience.
