Last month, PINE64, a company behind PinePhone smartphones, announced that the next Community Edition (CE) of PinePhone will feature a full-fledged postmarketOS. Following the same, PINE64 has now started taking pre-orders for its new PinePhone postmarketOS Community Edition (CE).
The most interesting thing about this new model is the introduction of the PinePhone “Convergence Package.” Yes, along with its regular community edition, you can now also pre-order another variant of PinePhone CE that comes with Convergence Package.
The standard edition of PinePhone with postmarketOS possesses almost the same specifications as the previous PinePhone Braveheart and PinePhone CE with Ubuntu Touch had, such as 2GB RAM, and 16GB flash storage.
But for the first time, PinePhone comes with a Convergence Package that brings extra features and specifications. This includes an increased RAM (3GB instead of 2GB), eMMC (32GB instead of 16GB), and a compatible USB-C dock.
You can now use a USB Type-C dock on PinePhone to charge, output digital video, and connect with external peripherals like a monitor, mouse, or keyboard. Overall, with USB-C power-in, HDMI, ethernet, and two USB ports, you can turn your Linux-based PinePhone into a desktop computer.
Obviously, you also have to pay an extra amount of about $50 for the extra features. As usual, the price of the standard edition is $149 USD and the edition with a “convergence package” costs $199 USD.
Where To Buy PinePhone?
Before I let you know how you can buy the new PinePhone postmarketOS CE, I want to remind you again that PinePhone CE is still not fully ready for a daily driver. Both PinePhone hardware and Linux-based mobile postmarketOS are under heavy development.
Hence, I would suggest you should buy it only if you’re a Linux enthusiast who wants to test, experiment, and contribute to the PinePhone project. Even though PinePhone supports core functionalities like calls, SMS, LTE, and GPS, you still cannot use it to replace your current iPhone or Android smartphone.
So, once you decide why you want to have PinePhone, head over to the PINE64 shop and order your PinePhone postmarketOS community edition. The shipment is estimated to begin in late August 2020.
