KARACHI: In a startling development, Karachi has been identified as the most polluted city globally, topping the world’s Air Quality Index (AQI). The Sindh capital is currently grappling with extremely poor air quality, as particulate matter (PM) levels have soared to 179, which presents serious health hazards.

Despite the presence of clear skies, increasing air pollution levels have raised alarms among experts, who caution that prolonged exposure could lead to significant respiratory issues.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reports that the city’s temperature reached a high of 32°C and a low of 20.4°C, complemented by mild northern breezes and a humidity level of 34%.

Health authorities have advised residents—particularly children and the elderly—to minimize outdoor activities and take necessary precautions against the polluted air.

Experts identify multiple factors contributing to the heightened pollution levels during winter, such as low wind speeds, alterations in wind direction, and a rapid drop in temperatures. As a result, harmful particles tend to settle closer to the ground, creating a dense layer of pollutants, with increased levels of carbon and soot further deteriorating air quality.
