How to Install Pop!_OS 21.10 on Raspberry Pi 4/400

In a recent update, Jeremy Soller, the Principal Engineer at System76, shared a screenshot showcasing Pop!_OS 21.10 successfully running on a Raspberry Pi 400. Following up on this, he posted a link to the experimental release of Pop!_OS 21.10. Curious to test it out, we installed it on our Raspberry Pi 4B.

This guide will walk you through the steps to install Pop!_OS 21.10 on your Raspberry Pi 4 or 400. Additionally, we will provide an overview of the build’s performance, including RAM and CPU usage.

Update: The stable version of Pop!_OS is now officially available for Raspberry Pi through the release of Pop!_OS 21.10.

How to Install Pop!_OS on Raspberry Pi 4/400

1. Visit the official Raspberry Pi imager website, download, and install the Raspberry Pi imager suitable for your platform.

2. Obtain a MicroSD card with a minimum capacity of 16GB along with an SDHC adapter. Insert the card into a card reader or your laptop/PC’s SD card slot.

3. Download the Pop!_OS 21.10 image from the provided link.

4. Launch the Raspberry Pi imager and select the ‘Choose OS’ option.

5. Pick the downloaded Pop!_OS .xz file.

6. Choose the MicroSD card by clicking on the ‘Choose Storage’ button.

7. Hit the ‘Write’ button to initiate the flashing process, which may take approximately 20-30 minutes.

8. Once completed, insert the MicroSD card into your Raspberry Pi and power it up.

9. The device should boot directly into the Pop!_OS setup, prompting you to configure settings such as username, password, network selection, and time zone.

10. Congratulations! Pop!_OS has been successfully installed on your Raspberry Pi.

Pop!_OS 21.10 Build Overview

Overall, the experimental build exhibits stability. During idle, it utilizes around 1.3/4 GB of RAM. Application launch times are impressive, with memory usage increasing to 2.3GB when opening five Firefox tabs, which is reasonable. The performance is swift, although animations may lack smoothness, typical for a Raspberry Pi.

720p video playback on YouTube performs smoothly with minimal frame drops. For enhanced performance, it is advisable to use a Raspberry Pi 4 fan case, which significantly impacts performance. The temperature remains below 55℃ throughout the usage.
