Wi-Fi is one of the primary means, along with Ethernet, for connecting devices to the Internet. For a PC to access Wi-Fi, it requires a wireless adapter or chip. Most portable devices, like laptops and tablets, are typically equipped with this wireless capability.

This guide provides detailed steps on enabling or disabling wireless Internet connectivity on Windows 11 PCs, as well as circumstances where this action might be beneficial.

Default Configuration: Wi-Fi is enabled by default on Windows 11. This setting allows the device to continually scan for available wireless networks. Once a connection is established successfully, Windows will attempt to reconnect to that network automatically in the future.

Reasons for Disabling Wi-Fi

  • The device is connected to the Internet via an Ethernet cable.
  • You want to temporarily or permanently restrict Internet access.
  • Simplifying network administration.

Enabling or Disabling Wi-Fi in Quick Settings

Step 1: Click the Wi-Fi icon found in the System Tray on the Windows 11 taskbar, located on the right side near the volume control.

Tip: You can also press the Windows key and A simultaneously to open Quick Settings.

Step 2: Tap on the Wi-Fi icon within the Quick Settings panel. This will switch the device’s Wi-Fi functionality on or off. If the background is blue, Wi-Fi is active; if it’s white, it’s inactive.

Optional: From this interface, you can connect to a different wireless network by clicking the right-arrow next to the Wi-Fi symbol.

Note that the names of available networks, typically displayed beside the signal strength indicator, are omitted here. The Wi-Fi toggle is also accessible on this page for switching Wi-Fi on or off.

Managing Wi-Fi through Windows 11 Settings

Another way to control wireless options on Windows 11 devices is through the Settings app.

Step 1: Click on Start and then select Settings to launch the app. Alternatively, the app can be accessed by pressing the Windows key and I together.

Step 2: Navigate to Network & Internet, where you will find a toggle for enabling or disabling Wi-Fi. Clicking this toggle adjusts the wireless connection’s status.

Optional: By clicking the arrow next to the Wi-Fi icon, you can access more management options, including another method to turn Wi-Fi connectivity on or off. If Wi-Fi is disabled here, a new menu will appear enabling you to set it to automatically reactivate after 1 hour, 4 hours, or 1 day.

Other options include:

  • Viewing the properties of the active wireless connection.
  • Listing all available wireless networks and options to connect to them.
  • Managing known networks, allowing for the removal of saved networks.
  • Examining the hardware properties of the wireless adapter.
  • Enabling a randomized hardware address for increased privacy.

Alternative Methods to Control Wi-Fi

Windows 11 users have several additional options for managing wireless connectivity, such as:

  • Using Device Manager to disable the wireless network adapter, which will turn off all Wi-Fi functions.
  • Accessing the classic Control Panel to disable Wi-Fi.
  • Utilizing the command prompt with the netsh command to turn off Wi-Fi.
  • Using a physical switch or button to activate or deactivate Wi-Fi.
