Have you ever wanted to take a screenshot from a YouTube video but struggled with issues like visible YouTube controls or low resolution?
This article will explain how to create high-resolution screenshots from YouTube videos without any user interface elements.
- Make sure the screenshots match the video’s resolution.
- Avoid showing any on-screen controls in the screenshots.
YouTube itself does not provide a direct way to take screenshots. Using browser or operating system tools might lead to the mentioned problems. Downloading videos is not the best solution either unless the media player supports screenshot capturing.
This leaves us with browser extensions and online services as viable alternatives.
Update: There is actually a built-in method available but it’s not immediately visible.
Here’s what you can do:
- Hold down the Shift key and then right-click on the video. (You may need to repeat this until the correct menu appears).
- Select “save video frame as…” from the menu that pops up.
- Save the screenshot to your local device.
Firefox users do not have this functionality. Although there is a “take snapshot” option, it only captures a frame in low resolution.
End of update
Before we proceed with the instructions, let’s consider some reasons why you might want to take a screenshot:
- Create a new desktop wallpaper.
- Keep important information saved.
- Capture images of things or people you like, such as celebrities, cars, or pets.
YouTube Screenshot Extensions
For capturing screenshots specifically from YouTube, browser extensions are crucial.
Here are some options for different web browsers:
YouTube Screenshot Button (Firefox)
This extension adds a “Screenshot” link to the YouTube player and allows you to use the Shift-A keyboard shortcut to take a screenshot without clicking the link.
Screenshot YouTube Video (Chrome)
This extension works on YouTube and a few other sites. It requests access to all sites, but it only needs access to supported sites. The extension adds a “take screenshot” button to the player that captures the current frame in the video’s resolution.
YouTube Video Screenshot Tool (Firefox)
This extension offers a “Take Screenshot” option in the Settings menu. Users who prefer a simpler interface may prefer this Firefox add-on over others.
Online Services for YouTube Video Screenshots
Online services provide an easy way to capture YouTube video screenshots without the need to install browser extensions. These services typically involve pasting the video URL into a form and clicking a capture button.
Downsides
- Many services do not allow you to capture a specific frame.
- Some services contain numerous ads and are not recommended.
I could not locate a single online tool that makes capturing YouTube video screenshots a simple task.
