Google Tests New Mini Preview Feature to Replace Top Shot in Google Photos

Top Shot, a popular feature on Google Photos for Android, is undergoing a transformation from a basic text option to potentially mini previews. The Top Shot feature allows users to select the best photo from a series of similar shots. Initially introduced with the Pixel 3, it has been a consistent and valuable tool on Google Photos. Users are typically reminded to utilize this feature through a text chip, but now, some individuals are starting to observe mini previews instead.

This change is still in the testing phase and is not universally available on all Android devices. Google is likely evaluating the functionality and reception of this new feature before implementing it widely. Currently, most users need to tap on the text reminder to access the Top Shot user interface, where they can view alternative photos taken in burst or motion mode and select a preferred image.

The experimental feature displays mini previews where the text chip used to reside. This visual representation offers a clearer view of available photos but may reduce the emphasis on selecting the best shot. It resembles the burst mode user interface and could potentially confuse some users.

It is essential to note that this feature is still under evaluation by Google. Additionally, some users have reported encountering a “Swipe up for Top Shot” prompt instead of the standard text chip.
