The Flir FX looks to challenge the likes of Nest Cam and SmartCam HD Pro, relying on its extreme adaptability to gain a slice of the market share. It is currently priced at $195, placing it in the high-end category of DIY security cameras.
The Flir FX offers plenty of options to make it a worthy contender. It offers amazing HD video streaming and recording, time-lapse video feature, detection zones and with the use of optional accessories, one can convert their Flir FX for outdoor purposes and even use it as an action cam.
It offers 2-day free cloud storage which can be upgraded to 7 days storage for $100 a year or 30 days storage for $200 a year. It also comes with a micro SD card slot (supports up to 64 GB of memory). It is powered by an adapter but since it also has a 4-hour backup, you can go mobile with it. Other features include night vision, two-way audio, motion and sound alerts, and lastly, temperature and humidity sensors.
A distinguishable feature is the Rapid Recap which allows you to view a condensed time-stamped time-lapse video of all the activity that took place at a particular time. This adaptability, however, offers nothing to compensate for its large number of drawbacks. The device does not feature third party integration, like IFTTT and SmartThings. Apps are often prone to glitches and the activity log lags from time to time. Add to this, the device is plagued with frequent phantom alerts.
If the Flir FX can get rid of the quirks and performance issues that severely limits its function, then it has the potential to be one of the best in the business but in its current state, unless its portability might be of importance to you, the camera cannot be recommended as a worthy purchase, as you can get many other cameras at a lower price that are just as good.
