Mozilla is preparing to release the second point update for Firefox 137 shortly. This forthcoming update will address security vulnerabilities within the browser and introduce a comprehensive set of bug fixes as well.
As is the norm, our preview of this update is based on preliminary information. There is always the chance that certain features may change or new ones may be added before the official launch; however, the information tends to be fairly reliable.
Firefox 137.0.2
The update version 137.0.2 for Firefox includes a specific security enhancement. More information will be disclosed following the official rollout, and we will update this article accordingly.
In addition to the security improvements, several notable enhancements are included in Firefox 137.0.2.
DRM Playback and Video Issues
A significant change in this release is the reinstatement of support for Microsoft PlayReady hardware decryption DRM in Firefox 137 to a select list of supported sites. Initially, Mozilla had attempted to broaden support, which resulted in video playback issues on some websites and even crashes. The adjusted support now better aligns with the specific DRM capabilities required by streaming services.
Furthermore, Mozilla has addressed another video-related issue, correcting a problem where Firefox would not respond to user clicks in certain HTML5 video players.
Restart Issue After Update
Recently, some users brought to Mozilla’s attention a problem regarding restarts. After installing an update, Firefox would request multiple restarts. Normally, only a single restart is needed to finalize the update process.
Users noticed that Firefox would only complete the update if the browser was closed and restarted. The upcoming release aims to resolve this issue, although Mozilla continues to investigate the underlying cause.
Additional Fixes
Here is a list of other fixes included in the Firefox update:
- Addressed an issue where the file picker would not appear on macOS within about:logins during password exports.
- Resolved several accessibility issues concerning the new PDF signature capability.
- Corrected a problem in the Style Editor that led to duplicate code entries.
- Fixed a functional regression in XSLT support that was introduced in Firefox 137.
- Addressed a flickering tooltip issue on Windows when hovering over different elements.
- Fixed a problem that affected radio input elements.
Mozilla anticipates launching Firefox 137.0.2 today. Since this update focuses on security, it will be automatically installed on most non-managed Firefox setups. To manually check for the update, go to Firefox Menu > Help > About Firefox. This will start the download and installation process once it has been officially released by Mozilla.
