Finding the Right Keywords for SEO

A critical step in promoting your article is finding the right keywords for SEO.

Finding the right keywords for SEO is not always easy. Keyword research is without a doubt the most tedious part of the SEO process, but it’s one of the most important steps. There are many ways to find keywords for your site that are not only easy to rank for, but drive traffic and increase conversions as well.

Brainstorm
One of the first things that you should do is brainstorm keywords and research your target audience. This may seem like an obvious step, but many people overlook it. Create a list of keywords that you think you should use. Think about the terms and phrases you would use when searching for the information or products you are providing. Add these keywords and phrases to your brainstorming list.

You can also use Google to get some more keyword ideas. Search for some of the keyword phrases on your brainstorming list and check the bottom of the results page for similar keywords. These are other search terms that people are searching for that are relevant to your keyword or niche.

Use Keyword Selection Tools
After brainstorming, you can use keyword selection tools to begin extending your keywords list. While there are many keyword tools available, Google AdWords Keyword Planner is the tool of choice for SEO experts.

You will need a Google AdWords account to use the Keyword Planner tool, which is free to create. The great thing about Keyword Planner is that it provides you with more than just search information, such as competition and number of searches. It also provides you with variations of the search term, so you can find other long-tail, relevant keywords to include in your site. Start out by searching for your main keyword and start adding more relevant keywords to your list.

Wordtracker and WordStream are a few other keyword selection tools you can use to find SEO keywords for your site.

Check out the Competition
One of the most important aspects of keyword research is analyzing the competition. Keywords that are highly competitive will be difficult (in some cases next to impossible) to rank for without a large budget and lots of time. This is why it’s not the best idea just to choose keywords with the most searches.

Google’s Keyword Planner does have a Competition column, but this refers only to competition on AdWords. While Keyword Planner tool cannot provide you with information on how competitive a keyword is to rank for, it can give you some insight. If a keyword is highly competitive on AdWords, there’s a good chance that it’s highly competitive in the search results as well.

You can also determine how difficult it is to rank for keywords by checking out other websites that rank on the first page. How many backlinks do these websites have? Are these authority sites? If the first page is filled with high authority websites that have extensive backlink portfolios, you may have a hard time outranking them.

Be Specific & Keep it Local
When formulating your SEO keywords list, try to be as specific as possible. Avoid choosing generic terms and try to include local keywords if applicable. Let’s say you own a beauty salon. Ranking for search terms like “wax,” “massage” or “facial” may be difficult, but ranking for “bikini wax” or “deep tissue massage” may be less competitive. You can tack on a geolocation to create laser targeted keywords that are easier to rank for and get customers through your door.
