Discover the New Features of Firefox’s Enhanced Profiles Manager

Firefox has offered profile support for quite some time, which might come as a surprise to many users due to the feature’s limited exposure. Veteran users know that launching Firefox with the -p parameter opens the profile manager, and you can also access this feature through about:profiles in the address bar.

In terms of usability, Firefox’s profile management has not performed as well when compared to Chromium-based browsers. This discrepancy likely motivates Mozilla’s initiatives to improve user experience.

Recently, a revamped Profile Manager has been introduced within the Firefox Nightly version. This marks the beginning of the rollout for the new manager to Firefox Stable, the version most commonly used.

Important to note: Profiles offer more than just an updated interface and icons; they serve as distinct user accounts, each capable of retaining its own bookmarks, open tabs, installed extensions, and various settings.

Here’s what you can expect.

Firefox’s Profile Manager

By clicking the Menu icon in the Firefox toolbar, you’ll find the new Profiles option. A further click reveals all existing profiles, along with options to create and manage them.

You can easily load any profile by selecting its name or icon, which will open it in a new browser window while keeping your current session active.

Selecting the option to create a new profile takes you to a page where you can assign a name, theme, and avatar to each profile.

If you opt to manage profiles, you’ll be presented with an overview and management options that allow you to:

  • Edit any profile.
  • Remove a profile.
  • Create a new profile.
  • Enable or disable the “choose a profile when Nightly opens” feature.

This management window will also open if you select to choose a profile at the browser’s startup.

Note that if you disable the profile selection option, the most recently used profile will load automatically. However, you can still switch to a different profile via the profile menu.

For interested users, the older profile manager is still available. You can continue to start Firefox using the -p parameter to access it for the time being.

The addition of the new profiles option in Firefox’s menu enhances the visibility of this feature, highlighting it for many users, which is a promising development.
